Here is a comprehensive nine step Process to design a lesson plan that has served me very well as I have designed a variety of training programs for clients:
- L OOK at the TRAINING NEEDS.
- E STABLISH the TRAINING GOALS.
- S ELECT the KEY CONTENT.
- S ET the desired LEARNING LEVELS.
- O RGANIZE the LEARNING OBJECTIVES.
- N EGOTIATE the AGENDA.
- P ROPOSE the TRAINING METHODS.
- L IST the necessary TRAINING RESOURCES.
- A RRANGE to EVALUATE if the training need has been met.
N OW CREATE the TRAINING MATERIALS!
If a diagram is useful for you, here is a very basic depiction of the lesson plan design process:
There are three components that go into creating the learning objectives: the key content, the desired learning level, and an active verb that reflects the desired learning level. Putting these three together makes it easy to create the learning objectives.
There are two key content templates that I use to create lesson plans for skill-building and for attitude-changing training programs. They create a step by step process to insert the learning objectives in a logical sequence.
What I like about this lesson plan design process is that it is simple, logical, and comprehensive. I am able to design experiential training programs very quickly. In addition, I can annotate the lesson plan to create a facilitator guide if someone else will be facilitating the program.
