This Tip determines that it is fiction to say that generational differences impact training. All value participatory skill-building training.
“There is almost no relationship between age and preferred modality. And the order in which each generational group ranks delivery methods is nearly identical.” Amy DuVernet and Taryn Oesch
Fiction. Amy DuVernet and Taryn Oesch conducted research with Training Industry, Inc. They found that learner preferences do not differ across generations.
It is Fiction to Say That Generational Differences Impact Training
Everyone values and benefits from participatory skill-building training programs that:
- respect the learners’ expertise and time,
- are highly interactive,
- use a variety of engaging training techniques,
- provide good practical content they can use immediately, and
- offer sufficient practice to strengthen their new skills.
May your learning be sweet.

Note
[Note: It is likely that DuVernet and Oesch conducted their research in late 2019. Since then, we have seen text, social media, micro-learning, web-based learning, self-paced learning, blended learning, virtual learning, and artificial intelligence expand training options. There are also multiple communication channels that didn’t exist back then, such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, What’s App, etc.
I still think a case can be made that all generations want trainers to respect their time and expertise. I’m certain that they also appreciate interactivity and want relevant content and sufficient practice opportunities.
They may have different preferences regarding how a trainer delivers the training. Generally, it is possible that the younger generations (Gen Y, Gen Z and Gen A ) may prefer digital and technological training methods. However, researchers do not unanimously accept the idea of training based on generational stereotypes.
I personally think that learners of all generations benefit from the different expanded training options and learning opportunities.]
If your organization would like to test my theory that all generations appreciate participatory training, please book a call to discuss an interactive skill-building workshop. https://laurelandassociates.com/contact/
