There should always be two training goals when designing a lesson plan for experiential training.
The first goal is what the learners will learn.
The second goal is why this learning is of benefit to the learner (from the learners’ perspective).
Together, these two goals should create a persuasive invitation to learning.
The second goal is very important and often neglected.
Including a goal that speaks to why the learners will benefit from the training will ensure that motivational training benefits are incorporated and reinforced in the actual training content and learning activities. This is the best way to create compelling and relevant content.
Establishing the training goals is the first and most significant step in planning training content. This is because all other content decisions will be based on and drawn from the goals.
The learning objectives identify what the learners will do to achieve the goals.
The learning activities identify how the learners will achieve the learning objectives.
The evaluation of the training will assess how well the training goals were achieved.
