Tip #21: Knowledge of Results Can Create a Motivational Environment

Knowledge of results is the third motivational training technique. We want to set learners up for success. The way they know they are success is by receiving specific and timely feedback.

External and Internal Feedback

There are two ways that learners can receive knowledge of results when completing learning activities: from others or from their own perception.

They can:

  1. receive specific constructive feedback from the instructor or their peers, and
  2. feel a personal sense of accomplishment when they know they have successfully applied newly learned skills.

3. Knowledge of Results:

The amount, specificity and immediacy of the feedback that learners receive directly affects their performance of a newly learned skill or technique.

Learners are motivated to improve when they find out:

  • what they are doing well,
  • what needs to be improved,
  • what to do to improve it, and
  • that there is a reasonable probability that they can improve.

Example:

There are many interactive learning activities that provide timely knowledge of results to learners about how well they understand and can use new learning:

  1. The instructor can give a brief lecture and then ask questions to see if the information has been understood. When the learners can answer the questions correctly, they know that they have successfully learned the content.
  2. Individual learners can complete a questionnaire to test their learning. Then the instructor can provide the answers to the questionnaire either orally or in written form so the learners know how well they did.
  3. Small groups can work on case studies or simulations that enable them to use their learning. When the groups debrief their answers, they will receive constructive feedback from the instructor and/or the other groups.
