Tip #1077: Your Job Isn’t Worth Dying For

This Tip describes what it’s like being in a toxic workplace and states that your job isn’t worth dying for.

What You Can’t Do in a Toxic Workplace

When you’re in a toxic workplace, you are living in a constant state of fear.

You can’t breathe freely.

Your blood pressure is dangerously high and your chest hurts.

You feel upset, afraid, stressed, and exhausted.

This is because you can’t be yourself.

You can’t:

  • Be authentic
  • Speak up
  • Defend yourself
  • Try something new
  • Do your job well

You can’t be authentic. This is because no one cares how you feel, what you think, or what you need. You’re not considered a real human being worthy of respect and support.

Speaking up is out of the question. No one wants to hear what you have to say. Policies and procedures are rigid and immovable. You have no input into decisions that affect you.

Defending yourself doesn’t work. They need someone to blame, and that’s you!  A toxic culture thrives on shaming, victimizing and isolating you.

Trying something new is a risk you can’t take, for fear of making a mistake. You know that accusations and retaliation would immediately follow.

It’s Hard to Do Your Job

Doing your job well becomes almost impossible, because:

  • You lack necessary tools and resources
  • No one gives you the information you need
  • There is confusion regarding what your job actually is
  • You are not allowed to make decisions
  • Performance expectations are unrealistic and constantly change

It doesn’t take long before you start to question your own competence and ability.

Your Job Isn’t Worth Dying For

You’re sad, unfocused, and feeling helpless and hopeless.

It takes emotional, psychological, and physical energy to function in a toxic workplace.

You need to be able to breathe freely, be yourself, and regain your health.

If you can’t count on anyone at your workplace, you need to count on yourself.

Don’t let yourself feel trapped.

You have the right to work in a safe and supportive environment.

Draw on the support of family and friends.

Create an escape plan. Then,

Get out!

Your job isn’t worth dying for.

May your learning be sweet,

Deborah
