This Tip describes the secret to successful employees, which involves six key steps, beginning with helping them like their job.
As a manager, it’s your job to set employees up for success.
That’s easy to say, but how do you do it?
Help Them Like Their Job
First, keep in mind that we want employees to like their job because it satisfies their intrinsic interests and needs.
We also want them to come to work with a sense of pride and a strong commitment to doing a great job. Most of us have a need to achieve and make a difference.
In general, we are happy to do the things we’re successful at.
Build On Their Strengths
As a result, build on your employees’ strengths. Give them work they’re good at.
Provide clear instructions regarding their work responsibilities and performance expectations. Ensure those expectations are reasonable and achievable.
Arrange for training if they need additional skills. And ensure they have the necessary tools and resources.
Give Timely Feedback
Next, give them timely and specific feedback.
Frequently keep in touch with them. Conduct an ongoing constructive dialogue throughout the year regarding their performance.
This way they’ll know you are aware when they are performing well. And if they’re not performing well, you can coach them to improve.
Develop Their Confidence
This will develop their confidence, in themselves and in you as their manager.
When we’re confident, we are much more likely to be open to taking on new tasks.
So delegate additional responsibilities to them and provide sufficient decision making authority so they can do them well.
Incorporate Their Interests
Find out what interests them and help them incorporate that into their work.
For example, if they are not customer-facing but enjoy interacting with others, assign them to represent you at meetings or organizational committees.
If they thrive on challenge, give them a stretch assignment. If they need a sense of security, try to make few changes to their job.
Lower Their Concerns
Lower any concerns they may have.
When there is a change, as there always is, give them a sense of control either through input into the change itself or how it will be implemented. Then make sure you keep them informed.
Create a Positive Work Environment
Finally, create and maintain a psychologically safe, comfortable and welcoming work environment.
Help them feel trusted and respected member of the team.
When employees feel valued and recognized, able to make mistakes and learn from them without repercussion, they will be more creative, flexible, and receptive.
So What Is The Secret to Successful Employees?
Do your job as a manager and do it well.
If you show that you value your employees, treat them with respect, communicate clearly and regularly, recognize their accomplishments, give them autonomy to make decisions, and create a motivational work environment, they will be successful.
And, by association, so will you.
