There are many delegation triggers that indicate when it’s important for a manager to delegate tasks to staff members.
Delegation Triggers
It is appropriate and necessary to delegate when:
Too Much On Your Plate
- You are burning out because you have more on your plate than you can reasonably handle in the time available.
- A new assignment means you can no longer perform some of your current functions.
- You are spending too much time on operations or technical work, taking away from your two primary managerial roles of getting results through people and assisting your employees to succeed.
- It costs too much for you to do it.
Lack of Expertise or Time
- There is a need to do something that you do not have the time or expertise to do.
- Someone else can do it as well or better than you can.
- You might do it poorly because of lack of time due to other duties.
- Another employee can do it adequately for the cost or time involved.
- An employee cannot do it as well, but you doing it interferes with something more important.
Development Potential
- You see developmental potential in employees.
- An employee makes a developmental request.
- A project or task will be useful for developing an employee, if costs and time permit and if you can afford the risk.
Productivity and Programs
- Productivity needs to be improved by having those closest to the issues authorized to make decisions.
- A reorganization creates new programs and tasks.
