Management development opportunities will be most effective if you ensure that:
___ 1. The focus of management development training is on the real issues and challenges they face on the job.
___ 2. Managers work together to develop solutions.
___ 3. Managers share their knowledge and experience.
___ 4. The management development content is provided in the context of the company policies and culture.
___ 5. Learning and working are integrated.
___ 6. Emphasis is made on the impact of company context and culture on the actions and decisions available to managers.
___ 7. The program is highly participatory.
___ 8. Managers apply what they are learning throughout the program.
___ 9. Learning activities check for comprehension and application, so both the instructor and the managers can see and assess their progress.
___ 10. Sufficient time is provided to practice what the managers learn.
___ 11. Managers complete an action plan to apply specific new learning.
___ 12. There is an established understanding that the managers will share their action plan with upper management.
___ 13. A post-class practice or application period is built into the program.
___ 14. Managers reflect on their practice experience.
___ 15. Managers who attend the program quickly evidence more effective management behaviors and decisions.
Without meeting at least these fifteen characteristics, your management development program will be ineffective and theoretical rather than practical and skill-building.
