Tip #105: Learning Activities

This Tip discusses the importance of having learning activities compatible with the desired learning level for every module in a training program.

The seventh step in the comprehensive nine step LESSON PLANning Process is:

STEP 7. PROPOSE THE LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Keep in mind that you want to create the curriculum for a skill-building, results-oriented experiential learning program.

a.Identify the activities for each module, including the time necessary for each activity. (Ensure that the activities are compatible with the level of learning for the learning objective.)

For example, if one learning objective requires an analysis level of learning, use a case study with problem-solving questions.

b.Build in a variety of instructional activities. (Ensure multi-modality to maximize learning and meet the needs of all learning preferences.)

For example, use a questionnaire in a way that satisfies participants who learn through interaction, conversation, touch, visual, or movement. Use a written questionnaire that a small group discusses and posts their responses on a flip chart.

c.Develop a plan to hold the participants accountable for learning. (A participant learning contract is one approach.)

d.Ensure that participants have an opportunity to apply new skills that they have learned. (If they don’t apply the new skills during the training session, it is unlikely that they will apply them after the session. We want to build their confidence in their competence.)

For example, if the new skill is how to be assertive in a conversation, use a role play that requires the participants to test their assertive communication skills.

If your trainers would benefit from learning how to create a variety of activities, please book a call to discuss a tailored train-the-trainer program. https://laurelandassociates.com/contact/
