Tip #100: Training Goals

This Tip looks at how to establish the training goals, which is the second step in the lesson planning process.

The second step in the comprehensive nine step LESSON PLANning Process is:

Step 2. ESTABLISH THE TRAINING GOALS.

There are always two stated training goals:

  1. what the learners will learn and
  2. why it is important to them.

We build the entire lesson plan around these two goals. For this reason, it is first important to identify in general terms what the learners will learn.

It is critical to include the second goal because we need buy-in from the learners that the training is relevant and important to them. Incorporating why the learning is important from their perspective ensures that there are content and learning activities that speak to this.

As trainers, we are always in the business of marketing our training. The Why Goal does this.

Here are the steps:

  1. Determine the purpose of the training program, based on the training needs assessment.
  2. Identify what learning is expected as the first goal.
  3. Identify why the learning is important from the learners’ perspective as the second goal.
  4. Create a title for the training program that reflects these goals.
