How to Decide if Coaching is Appropriate

Here is a decision tree to follow that will help you to determine whether coaching is appropriate and, if so, which coaching approach to use. As long as there is a cooperative relationship between the manager and the employee, then a coaching approach (train, develop, and/or problem solve) is appropriate. However, if a cooperative relationship does not exist and cannot be created, then coaching is inappropriate and will not be effective.
